If they inspire us to become more introspective about our real place “in the order of things,” maybe we should be talking about the Mummy’s Blessing rather than the Mummy’s Curse!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sandor and Gerald were in High School by this time and were lucky to be so. There were 65 High Schools in Chatham county in the 1920s, all of which were white. Archie was helping to run the laundry. There were 4 or 5 Chinese families in Savannah during the 1920s, but as Papa came in 1889 we were the first. Papa told the ones that came later to live and work separately from one another so that we would not frighten or enrage the city’s white inhabitants and instead “make them like us.” It is exclusively because of Papa that Savannah never developed a Chinatown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer's Blog - Orpheus - Dad at Georgia Tech, ca. 1939. Double exposure.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a founding member of the camera club that year, he experimented with many photographic techniques. Here, he has made a double-exposure of himself sitting at his desk. But you can also see the way he used his pipes as accessories and props in daily life. They were an intimate part of how he sought to project himself out into the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer's Blog - Orpheus - Dad spots an obliging sun dial and imagines himself the Winged Mercury, fleet-footed messenger of the gods, and good-natured trickster</image:title>
<image:caption>Not surprising, since he won the Freshman Cake Race at Georgia Tech and became a track star in college, known on campus as “Chopsticks Chan” for his strong, swift and “skinny” legs. And tricks? He had a few. Greek gods come to mind frequently with Dad, which is neither haughty overstatement nor mere imagination. He did indeed have many archetypal qualities. And as he himself would have said, “It ain’t braggin’ if it’s true.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Writer's Blog - Orpheus - Orpheus, if he lived in 1930s America.</image:title>
<image:caption>Dad was an impeccable dresser and he had considerable panache. This fit his colorful personality, but also reflected the fact that as a person of color in the Jim Crow South, he had to be “twice as good as everyone else to get half the recognition.” There was no room for mistakes. As a result, and despite being the life of the party, he did not drink.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer's Blog - Orpheus - Brilliant, charming and devastatingly handsome, Dad was irresistable, even and perhaps especially to white girls, which was fine with him.</image:title>
<image:caption>Interracial marriage was illegal in GA, and Dad said that although he was largely accepted by parents if he was one in a group of young people who ran around together, it was another story entirely if he was seen to be a favorite. More than one father started barring him at the door and told him to go home and not come back. When I asked what he did then, he said, “Well, I went home.” And then with a twinkle, “And we started meeting in secret.”</image:caption>

He reminded one not to take things so hard. Life is a great rollick, if you can let it be.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Left (from right to left): The first 3 Chinese children born in the state of Georgia, ca. 1911 - Archie, Sandor, and Gladys Geraldine (aka Gerald, aka GG). Right: Grandpa Chung T’ai P’eng (“Great Phoenix” but known in the US as Robert Chan) and Grandma Annie Lee, and four of their other children. Front: Sin Fah and Sandor; Middle: Gerald and Dad (on Grandma’s lap); Back: Archie, the oldest. The youngest, Bernice, was not yet born. As Dad was a September baby, this looks to be a Chinese New Year picture, probably taken for Grandpa to send back home to his own parents, whom he hadn’t seen in 25 years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dad was the only non-white person in any picture that didn’t involve family, and yet he always seemed to have a large group of friends, and plenty of girlfriends, even in the Jim Crow South. Magnetic personalities can do that - make people forget what their parents and society have told them and just want to be around you. All the Chan kids had this kind of magnetism. All of them were leaders in their friend groups. All of them bucked tradition and the law and married inter-racially.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer's Blog - Fun Fact: If You Like Water, Then You Already Like 70% of Me - a Blog Origin Story</image:title>
<image:caption>"I'm a Ramblin' Reck from Georgia Tech, and a Helluva Engineer." Dad was the first in his family to go to college. Here he is line fishing in the waterways near Savannah, Georgia with his sister-in-law, Merle, ca. 1933. The Yellow Jacket mascot on the jacket is a wonderful metaphor for the man himself. And look at his pith helmet, cocked to one side. Who but he could even get away with it? The chuckle that might have bubbled up in your throat upon first sight of it, would simply have died there. The man was colorful, but nothing if not authentic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writer's Blog - Fun Fact: If You Like Water, Then You Already Like 70% of Me - a Blog Origin Story</image:title>
<image:caption>After WWII, Dad went on to become an optical engineer with Kodak, and worked on the Top Secret CORONA Project, which was only declassified relatively recently, but which is now credited with having helped to end the Cold War. His task? To create a camera lens that could take the first pictures of Earth from space, with resolution high enough to discern between two yellow lines on a highway, or to read the headline of a newspaper. He held 13 patents in aero-space engineering, many of which continue to be in use today.</image:caption>
